Bubblegum

Suddenly I stepped in bubblegum.

Grape flavoured bugglegum at that. No doubt the worst kind to step in.

Sniffing around.

I was definitely on the scent.

Following an unmistakable smell through the underbrush, over a rock, into a cave and out again. It led me back towards the city. He'd gone back into the city.

I'd come close to finding him many times, but now I was-

- what on earth? I smell burning ... foliage, and ... and skin! Good lord, the odour was strong - overpowering. Something was happening just beyond the next concrete rise, down in the aqueduct. A noise like stoking a fire now, loud and clear, and someone coughing.

Then, out of the darkness a shape soaring out of the smoke, alight as if on fire, but not in pain, it was as if the fire itself was propelling him.

The figure blitzed into the dark night sky, whooshing right over my head, and vanishing into the murk.

Covering my face with my shroud, I stepped over the rise to see what damage he'd done.

Without warning I stammer back as an abnoxious 'CRACKK' perviates throughout my head. My heart beat stops for a split second before errupting into an uncontrollable adrenaline pumping frenzy.

Fighting to refocus my thoughts, realising the entirity of my iminent danger, the changes began. I feel it enveloping the tips of my toes, the feeling spreading quickly across the heels splitting the soles of my shoes. The intense smouldering heat eminating brightly in quick licks of flame, flicking up surrounding dead leaves, clouding the evening air with glowing embers. I hear the attacker coughing, but my lungs feel increasingly clearer with every breath. I feel the sensation wash over me, I ride the first wave of heat which propels me forwards across the dusty landscape. I trip but quickly move to recover; harnessing it now, I sweep high into the open sky..
